About

We are a community who meet to dance to swing music from the 1920s to 1940s, with regular classes and events. All are welcome. No previous experience necessary.

Calder Valley Swing operates on a non-profit basis, as an ‘Unincorporated Association’ and is run by volunteers, led by Rebecca Slaven, and Kevin Leach.

We thank and pay tribute to the overwhelmingly black musicians and dancers, who pioneered the music and dance styles that we enjoy today.  That they did this in an era of segregation, persecution, deprivation and war, is beyond remarkable, and we celebrate their creativity, and resolve.  We recognise that our reproduction of this music and dance comes from a position of privilege, and that we are guests in another culture, the experience of which we have not lived, and cannot fully understand.  We condemn the treatment of African and indigenous Americans by our European ancestors, and stand firmly for equality.
